CHAPTER 9

Winter

Forbidden Mates

Liza’s expression said plainly that this conversation was not an option. But Winter needed her to understand that their plan could end badly. There was too much Liza didn’t know—that the mansion they were planning to go to belonged to Heather, and what kind of monster Heather was, and what horrors she would find there.

“We’ll be breaking into someone’s house,” Winter said, “someone who possibly abducted a bunch of people. Nothing about this is safe.”

Liza sat up, holding the duvet over her chest. “And why are you more qualified to go than me? Don’t you think it’s better if I go and you stay? I’m the one with the missing brother.”

Winter rubbed a hand over her mouth. How was she supposed to convince Liza of the dangers? “I just want you to understand the risks—”

“Of course I know the risks! What are you talking about? If either of us is going, it should be me.”

“So you’re fine with risking your life, then?”

“Yes!” Liza said, her voice echoing beneath the vaulted ceiling. “Do you have any idea what it’s like to lose a sibling? I’m going to do everything I can to find him.”

Winter shut her mouth, not sure how to respond. She didn’t know what having a sibling was like because she’d been taken from her real family as a baby. But she did know what it was like to lose the closest thing she had to a sister.

“I shouldn’t have told you I was rattled from that cougar incident,” Liza said, leaning away from Winter as if a wall had gone up between them. “Now you think I’m too frail and pathetic to do anything.”

“That’s not what this is about!”

“Uh-huh.”

Shit. Now she thinks I see her as some damsel.

The truth was far from it.

“We should both get some sleep,” Liza said, narrowing her eyes. “Thank you for showing me my room.”

Her tone and body language said clearly that they would be spending the night in separate beds.

Winter hesitated, wanting to say more, but no words were sufficient. Liza deserved the truth, and Winter couldn’t give it to her.

So she stood and pulled on her T-shirt, a ball of dread in her stomach. “We’ll make a plan tomorrow like we talked about.”

“Good,” Liza snapped.

“Do you like pancakes?”

“What?”

“Pancakes. I’ll make you breakfast in the morning.”

Liza’s expression shifted between confusion, defiance, and something softer. Finally, she nodded.

“Okay,” Winter said. “Goodnight, Liza.”

She headed for the bedroom door, and Liza didn’t stop her.

In her own room, she flopped into bed without bothering to change into pajamas.

Why did her life have to be so complicated? Why couldn’t she have met Liza in the pub, flirted, and taken her home like a normal person? She couldn’t even do something normal like have sex without the truth getting in the way. In the heat of everything, she’d nearly transitioned into her feline form right there in the bedroom.

Her skin tingled everywhere Liza had touched her. Being with her was beyond anything Winter had experienced. It
